Already well known to  be THE heart healthy diet of the ages, it is now also reconised to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome. This is a cluster of risk factors which increase the risk of stroke diabetes and heart disease.

Someone who has 3 or more of the following conditions can be diagnosed with having metabolic syndrome.

  • Blood pressure 130/85 mmHg or higher
  • Fasting blood glucose equal to or higher than 100 mg/dL
  • Waistline measuring 35 inches or more in women
  • Waistline measuring 40 inches or more in men
  • HDL (good) cholesterol under 40 in men
  • HDL (good) cholesterol under 50 in women
  • A triglyceride count equal to or higher than 150 mg/dL

    Dr. Toby Cosgrove, the CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, and a heart surgeon for over thirty years, recently sparked a firestorm of controversy when he told a New York Times reporter that if it were up to him, if there weren’t legal issues, he would not only stop hiring smokers. By the turn of the century, the rate in 21 states was over 20%, and today Colorado is the only state with a rate below 20%.  More alarming still is the fact that six states now exceed a 30% rate of obesity!

    A recent study suggests that olive leaf extract may help lower blood pressure as effectively as the drug captopril (Capoten®).

    Olive leaves come from the olive tree (Olea europae), which is native to the Mediterranean. While olives and olive oil are used as foods, olive leaf is primarily used medicinally or as a tea.


    In the Middle East, olive leaf tea has been used for centuries to treat high blood pressure, sore throat, coughs, fevers, cystitis and gout. Olive leaf poultices have also been applied to the skin to treat skin conditions, such as boils, rashes and warts.



    The first group received 500 milligrams of olive leaf extract (EFLA®943) twice daily for eight weeks. The second group started treatment with 12.5 milligrams of captopril twice daily for two weeks. Depending on how the participants responded to treatment, the dose either remained the same or was gradually increased up to 25 milligrams twice daily for the remaining six weeks.
